5 Habits Only the Highly Disciplined Will Understand

We’ve all wondered how the most successful people do it. We’ve all questioned “What do they do that the average person does not do?”

Whether it comes to being fit or being in a healthy, long marriage, being more successful, or being happy, there is one trait all successful people typically embody. That is discipline.

Like what Theodore Roosevelt said, “With self-discipline, most anything is possible!”

But these highly-disciplined people aren’t just born with that trait. Oftentimes, they develop this certain ability because they have these habits that consistently help them make disciplined decisions.

In this article, we will talk about the habits of the highly-disciplined that you can apply in your life as well to become the person you want to be, so that you can reach your goals.

1. Highly disciplined people seek ACCOUNTABILITY

They understand that they need to surround themselves with the right kind of people. In short, they choose the correct environment. The environment that will help them grow and at the same time supports their goals.

You are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. If someone isn’t making you stronger, they’re making you weaker.” – Tim Ferriss

2. They take matters into their own hands

The highly-disciplined take matters into their own hands. Which means they don’t blame anyone or anything for their life circumstances. They don’t let life victimize them, instead, they take ownership of the situations they are in. They are meticulous about taking 100% responsibility for their lives because they know that they will only get results when they don’t complain.

If at some point in their life they get stumbled upon a circumstance, they make sure they take control of what they can rather than just complaining about what they can’t control to improve their situation.

3. They do what’s right instead of just doing what’s easy

For instance, Doing what’s easy: Eating whatever food is available, or whatever food tastes good. Doing what’s right: Fighting off that craving for another half hour, and then eating the healthy food you’ve made at home.

This is how the highly-disciplined maintains their healthy lifestyle. Sometimes, if you want to work on your goals and your dreams, you need to do what’s right, which may mean working every evening or working every weekend. If you want to lose a certain amount of weight, write a book, save for a vacation, or start a passion project – those habits require time and consistent effort, over time.

4. They act in alignment with their goals

They act in alignment with their goals regardless of how they currently feel. Even if they don’t feel like it at first, they will always find a way to motivate themselves to do something about what they want in the future, and because they know how to choose a good environment, they have a high-quality mindset that makes high-quality decisions.

They know they have a goal to achieve so they prime their mind for discipline. They prime their mind by:

  • Exercising
  • Reviewing long-term goals
  • Visualizing about their future success

From this state of mind, it’s a lot easier to make high-quality, productive decisions compared to being in a ‘normal’ state of mind.

5. They deal with the difficult tasks first

They like to deal with the most difficult task first because they know the mind will always trick us into taking the easy way out. They will never like the idea of procrastination and they understand that this is just the mind trying to trick them into taking the path of least resistance. They don’t fall for this mind-trickery because they know the human mind prefers instant-gratification and is always trying to avoid the difficult stuff.

They enjoy taking the difficult tasks out of the way first because then the rest of the tasks would feel like a breeze.

Overall, the most disciplined are the way they are because of 2 things:

One, they have clarity on what their daily rituals are, the rituals that will help them materialize the goals they want.

Two, they are religious about making sure those get done every day, regardless of what day it is, regardless of how they feel, regardless of whether they want to right now.

They make sure it gets done.
